
The evolution of the Leuven student
What does six centuries of student history look like? What obstacles did students face? And how did they manage to overcome them?
Over the past six centuries, our lecture halls have been populated by a wide assortment of bright minds. Some seemed mainly to enjoy the University beer cellar, others became influential thinkers and entered the history books. Still others – as with the first female students – paved the way for many generations come. As befits a University that made its home in a medieval cloth hall, the past 600 years of student life present a detailed tapestry of brilliant colours and vivid imagery. Herein, a brief summary.
What was life like for students at the Old University (1425-1797)? What obstacles did they face? And how did they manage to overcome them? These are just some of the questions addressed during the exhibition Routes. 600 years of University in Leuven, which opens in October. We knock on the door of Annelies Vogels and Liesbet Nys of the External Relations, Conferences and Events Office, who together with their fellow curators are busy making final preparations.
