Which dream project would our researchers pursue if they were given ‘carte blanche’? We ask computer scientist Thomas Winters.
What if our researchers were swimming in money, allowed to duck out of commitments and had oceans of time at their disposal? Which project would they embark on? In this column, they are given carte blanche and we go angling for their ultimate dream. Computer scientist Thomas Winters enlists artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) to create a virtual dungeon master for his favourite game: Dungeons & Dragons.
Put on your VR headset and dive into the fantasy world of Hawthorne Kingdom. The guise in which you enter this medieval universe of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is entirely up to you. You name it: an Orc bard in a pirate outfit or a mushroom druid? You describe what your character should look like and the AI behind the game brings it to life. Through your VR goggles you see treasure rooms or haunted forests appear, all with the right lighting and mood music, whilst you and your fellow players make up the storyline on the spot. Would you like a dose of combat, such as fighting a devil made of glass in a mirror palace? You ask, AI and VR deliver.
