An Exchange Student on the Belgian Economic Mission to Australia

On Tuesday, October 24th, the delegation from the Belgian economic mission in Australia landed in Sydney to discuss the significance of artificial intelligence in education. In the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid, emphasis was placed on the strong connection between the academic world and companies specializing in or working with AI. Alongside speakers from the business sector, KU Leuven, UGent, and UAntwerpen were also in attendance. This exchange student in Sydney was part of the event.

D-teach and VLUHR hosted the conference. Belgian researchers working at Australian universities, such as the University of New South Wales or the University of South Australia, presented their studies on AI and education. For instance, they showcased a Mars robot simulation designed to encourage children to think critically and solve problems. Additionally, there was a panel discussion with companies involved in AI. The event concluded with a networking reception.

In addition to AI experts, researchers, and business professionals, alumni from KU Leuven were invited, along with exchange students from KU Leuven in Australia. I was impressed by the extensive academic network that allows Belgian expertise to make its mark on the global stage. Meeting alumni and hearing their stories about life and work on the other side of the world was particularly enlightening. Personally, I had the opportunity to meet Rector Luc Sels, Vice-Rector Piet Desmet, and the Director of the International Office, An Descheemaeker. I was impressed by the support they provide for international KU Leuven projects and partnerships with Australian universities. Of course, we also had the chance to connect with other exchange students from KU Leuven, which was quite pleasant when you're almost 17,000 kilometers away from home. It's remarkable how far-reaching the KU Leuven network is, even extending to Sydney.
