Belgian Euroscepticism: What can be done?

Belgium has traditionally been characterized by a lasting permissive consensus on European integration issues. But this is currently under threat. In their contribution to ‘Euroscepticism and the Future of Europe: Views from the Capitals’ Wouter Wolfs and Steven Van Hecke (Public Governance Institute) propose the following recommendations: (1) the EU level deserves its own election campaign and (2) media, civil society and academia should invest more efforts in emphasizing the “democratic surplus” of the EU’s political system, in particular compared to the Belgian political system at the national as well as the regional level.
