Lars de Wildt, Institute for Media Studies, defended his Ph.D on  “Playing at Religion: Encoding/decoding religion in videogames.” His promotor is Prof. dr. Derk Aupers.
Young people in the west are more likely to encounter religion in videogames than in places of worship like churches, mosques or temples.

This Ph.D.-project contributes to an understanding of what place we grant religion in the 21st century, both in light of existing theories of religious change; and in light of how videogames offer billions of people the chance to play 'at' religion: to take on identities and worldviews entirely different from their own.
